Ashleigh Flynn, Rick Hardin and Jim Brunberg to be featured at the first of a new series of events sponsored by the Mill Valley-based indie record label.

MILL VALLEY, CA. - George Daly, CEO of About Records and former A&R head at  BMG, Atlantic and Elektra Records, announced today that About Records will be sponsoring live events designed to support and expand the music community of northern California.

"With two great new albums by Tim Hockenberry. and Larkin Gayl set for release, we anticipate that 2012 will be a Leap Year for About Records as well as our new artist label, TROVE Music. So the Leap Day of February 29 seems like the perfect time to launch our new series of events."

At the heart of The Leap Year Event is the CD Release Party for "American Dream," the new record by Ashleigh Flynn, the Portland-based native of Kentucky whose record "Sneakin' Out with Ashleigh Flynn - Live at Mississippi Studios" received critical acclaim and established her as a favorite in the Northwest Americana scene.

Co-headlining the Leap Year Event will be singer/songwriter Rick Hardin, the north bay native whose song "Yeah Yeah Yeah" has been generating strong buzz thanks to radio airplay and a featured spot on KFOG's Local Scene 4 album.

Opening the show will be Jim Brunberg, founding member of longtime Bay Area favorites, Box Set as well as the founder of one of Portland's most popular new venues, Mississippi Studios.

The Leap Year Event kick off at 4 p.m. on February 29 with a Songwriter's Workshop and Competition hosted by Drew Pearce, Music Performance Manager for About Records, Contributing Writer for Acoustic Guitar magazine, and founder of Bay Area House Concerts. The workshop panel will include Daly, Pearce, Flynn, Brunberg and Hardin, who will provide feedback and advice for the participants.

At the end of the Songwriter's Workshop, the panel will select a "Best Song," whose writer will win the opportunity to be a featured performer at the next About Records / TROVE Music event.

To participate in the workshop, songwriters are asked to submit Myspace or YouTube links to About Records' Artist Relations & Development Director, Jason Cole  The week before the event, 10 workshops participants will be selected and announced at Aboutrecords.

Rounding out the Leap Year Event is the After Party Open Mic in which audience members will be invited to step on stage and perform after the featured performances.

"Hosting house concerts has shown me that the more inclusive an event is, the more memorable the night will be," Pearce explained. "So in addition to staging an exciting live concert, we want to create an event that goes beyond the passive experience of watching other performers. We want create a participatory experience that will attract and involve other musicians as well as music fans."

The Leap Year Event is also a way for Daly and the team at About Records to scout for new talent. "In the new landscape of the music industry, the dynamic has changed from push to pull," said Daly. "By presenting events that build community and offer opportunity, we're setting the stage to fundamentally change the way a record company does business."

Sweetwater Station on Magnolia (Formerly known as The Larkspur Cafe Theater) is located at 500 Magnolia Avenue in downtown Larkspur, California. Tickets to the concert are $10 and can be ordered online at Ticket Web.
